Phlebotomist – Part‑time Shifts in Cape Town Southern Suburbs

About the role

We are looking for an experienced phlebotomist to provide part‑time blood‑collection support in the Emergency Centre of a private hospital located in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. The role is shift‑based and covers periods when a permanent phlebotomist is unavailable.

Key responsibilities

• Draw venous, arterial and paediatric blood samples in accordance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
• Provide pre‑ and post‑test counselling to patients and families, explaining procedures and answering questions.
• Identify, prevent and report risks, maintaining a sterile work area and adhering to infection‑prevention protocols.
• Record and process patient and clinical information accurately, including stock usage and charge‑back.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary emergency team to ensure seamless patient care.

Required profile

• Reside in Cape Town Southern Suburbs or surrounding areas.
• Enrolled Nurse or Phlebotomy Technician with a certificate in Phlebotomy Techniques.
• Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) or the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technician – Phlebotomy.
• 1–2 years of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
• Willingness to obtain Hepatitis B vaccination if not already vaccinated.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy techniques (venous, arterial, paediatric).
• Arterial blood gas sampling.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.
• Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
