Permanent Track Research Astronomer – Optical‑Infrared Scientist

About the role

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) seeks a permanent‑track Research Astronomer to lead optical‑infrared science and instrumentation development. The role is equivalent to a tenure‑track assistant professorship and will support next‑generation facilities such as the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) and upcoming space missions like the Habitable Worlds Observatory.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and test optical‑infrared instruments for ground‑based and space telescopes.
• Conduct cutting‑edge scientific research using these instruments.
• Collaborate with internal and external teams to integrate instrumentation with the GMT and future space missions.
• Secure research funding, publish results, and mentor junior staff.

Required profile

• Junior or mid‑career scientist with a proven record of major scientific achievements.
• Demonstrated experience in optical‑infrared instrumentation development.

Required skills

• Optical/infrared instrumentation development.
• Telescope instrumentation design and integration.
• Space‑mission instrumentation experience.
