Operations Controller Shovel

About the role

Kumba Iron Ore is looking for an Operations Controller for shovels in its Mining (MIN) department, band P4, reporting to the Shift Supervisor. The role ensures safe and efficient coordination of operational and loading activities, optimises cycle performance and fleet utilisation, and upholds safety and production standards while operating Ultra-class and smaller shovels.

Key responsibilities

• Safety, health and environment: follow safety standards, apply SLAM, HIRA and Mini-HIRA, prevent vehicle and equipment interactions, take part in safety meetings, perform site safety inspections and escalate risks to the supervisor.
• Equipment operation and inspection: operate the Ultra Shovel and smaller shovels according to certification, licence and OEM specifications, carry out pre-shift inspections of collision avoidance, cameras, fire suppression, fatigue systems and hydraulic controls, and report defects.
• Loading and production: keep the loading area safe, execute accurate loading to meet payload targets and optimise truck-shovel cycles, adapt to face conditions, weather and visibility, and communicate with truck operators, dispatch and supervisors.
• Incident reporting and support: report equipment failures and safety concerns, take part in incident investigations, step into smaller equipment when needed and ensure proper shift handovers.
• Housekeeping: keep the cab, steps, windows, cameras and work areas clean to ensure good visibility and safe operation.

Required profile

• Grade 12 / N3.
• SA driver's licence, Red Permit and valid Dover certificate.
• Relevant HME licences (shovel-related); Competency A and Legal Liability A2 are advantageous.
• Three years of relevant operational experience in mining.

Required skills

• Knowledge of shovel systems, loading controls, collision prevention and fire suppression.
• Understanding of pit layout, bench conditions and haul road logistics.
• Telemetry interpretation (payload monitors, cycle-time dashboards).
• Multi-pass precision for Ultra-class shovels and fuel-efficiency techniques.
