Fire Prevention Assistant

About the role

Kumba Iron Ore, part of the Anglo American / De Beers Group, is looking for a Fire Prevention Assistant in its SHEPS & Contractor Management (SHEPS&CM) department in Kathu. The role assists the Fire Prevention Officer in implementing and executing the fire prevention and maintenance programme. It is a full-time position on Band S5 (B-Upper) level, reporting to the Section Manager Fire Prevention.

Key responsibilities

• Promote good housekeeping and discuss violations and unsafe conditions with the section's representative, giving recommendations and instructions on fire safety practices
• Assist the Fire Prevention Officer in preventing and extinguishing fires quickly and with minimal damage, and equip firefighting equipment to protect employees, contractors and visitors
• Help organise and run emergency drills, including fire drills, to assess evacuation and emergency response procedures
• Inspect new and existing buildings against fire standards, codes of practice and regulations, and inspect firebreaks, escape routes, evacuation plans and assembly points
• Carry out daily inspections, maintenance and testing of fire extinguishers, hydrants and detection and suppression systems
• Inspect properties storing or handling hazardous materials for compliance with laws and codes of practice
• Maintain fire prevention records and reports, and advise on standard violations and hazard elimination
• Recommend corrective actions to supervisors and coworkers, respond to mine emergencies promptly, and perform other duties assigned by the Fire Prevention Officer

Required profile

• Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4) or equivalent SAQA-recognised qualification, registered with the SAQCC
• Fire Prevention & Risk Assessment Certificate, or HIRA certificate
• Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certificates
• Hazmat Awareness and Operations Certificate
• First Aid Level 3 and Basic Ambulance Assistance certificates (advantageous)
• SA driver's licence
• 2-3 years of experience in fire prevention and maintenance (advantageous)

Required skills

• Knowledge of fire-fighting equipment and procedures
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures
• Basic knowledge of company policies and procedures and business communication
