Operations Controller – Ocean Freight Import

About the role

The Operations Controller will manage Ocean Freight Import shipments from initiation to completion, ensuring compliance with company policies and client specifications. This role supports effective service delivery by monitoring shipments, handling documentation, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Open shipment files, allocate numbers, and secure landside, transport, and third‑party service rates.
• Verify that shipping line invoices match internal buying rates and capture all required documentation for the clearing department.
• Gather cargo and rate information, finalize shipping methods with clients and international offices, and monitor cargo arrival against bookings.
• Communicate shipment status to clients, update event controls, and capture data in Cargowise.
• Track shipments through indent, POD, and invoice payment to ensure timely close‑out.
• Provide administrative support to the Sea Freight Import team and coordinate clearing instructions with clients and agents.
• Validate MBL/HBL details against invoices and packing lists before customs submission.
• Maintain strong relationships with carriers, agents, and clients to enhance brand reputation.
• Ensure compliance with company regulations and accurately record accruals, demurrage, and detention.

Required profile

• Matric (NCFF NQF 3/4) required; FIATA diploma or logistics degree/diploma advantageous.
• 3‑5 years of experience in Ocean Import services.
• Comprehensive knowledge of forwarding, clearing, Incoterms, and customs requirements.
• Strong attention to detail, decision‑making ability, and deadline orientation.
