Mid-Level Backend PHP Developer (Laravel) – Remote (South Africa)

About the role

We are looking for a skilled Mid‑Level Backend PHP Developer to join a technology‑focused organisation in Pretoria. You will work on scalable, high‑performance web applications using modern PHP frameworks, primarily Laravel, while collaborating with cross‑functional teams in a remote‑first environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services using PHP (Laravel preferred).
• Collaborate with frontend developers, QA, and product managers to ensure seamless integration.
• Write clean, maintainable, and testable code following best practices.
• Manage and optimise MySQL databases, including schema design and performance tuning.
• Identify performance bottlenecks and implement scalable improvements.
• Integrate third‑party APIs and external services.
• Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Relevant degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
• Minimum 3+ years of professional PHP development experience.
• Strong experience with Laravel or similar frameworks.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment with a fibre‑ready home setup (minimum 100 Mbps).
