Mechanical Fitter - Steelworks

About the role

SA Steelworks is looking for a qualified, committed and motivated Mechanical Fitter for its Fitters Department in the SA Steelworks Division in Cape Town. The successful applicant reports to the Fitters Supervisor.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out inspections on all plant machinery and routine planned and preventative maintenance
• Work through a computerised maintenance management system and attend to breakdowns when required
• Set up and adjust machinery and equipment, and keep general housekeeping
• Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Fit and assemble metal parts, tools or sub-assemblies, including welding or brazing
• Set up and operate hand and machine tools and welding equipment
• Read detailed drawings or specifications and check the accuracy and quality of finished parts
• Coach semi-skilled staff
• Work on industrial gearboxes, pinion boxes, flywheels, shears, pinch rollers, bearing housings, belt conveyors, roller tables, vibration tables, hydraulic and lubrication systems, wire tying machines, elevators, furnaces, evaporative coolers and mobile machinery

Required profile

• Red Seal Trade Test qualification in Fitting
• At least 5 years of post-trade test work experience in a manufacturing or production environment
• Knowledge of typical power tools used in the trade
• Physical strength, good hand-eye coordination and ability to work at heights
• Willingness to work overtime, perform standby and call-out duties, and own reliable transport
• Experience in the steel industry is advantageous

Required skills

• Working knowledge of OHSA
• CMMS software such as C-Works, SAP or API Pro
• Ability to work in a team and independently, with good communication skills
