Materials Tester - Civil Engineering Laboratory

About the role

SGS Matrocast, a division of SGS South Africa, is hiring materials testers for its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories in the Western Cape area. The role supports the Supervisor or Laboratory Manager with materials testing tasks, on site or in the commercial laboratory, and covers cleaning equipment regularly.

Key responsibilities

• Complete materials testing in the assigned laboratory division, including soils, asphalt/seals, concrete/aggregate, with bench calculations as needed
• Perform fieldwork such as density tests, layer and stockpile sampling, concrete cube handling, DCP, Ring and Ball tests, Sand Patch, on-site viscosity tests, and sampling of asphalt and bitumen
• For Senior Materials Testers: carry out all tests in all laboratory divisions and perform all calculations in full
• Control laboratory activities, including quality control under supervision
• Clean equipment regularly

Required profile

• Grade 12
• Proficiency in English (read, write, speak)
• Competent and qualified to carry out tests in one division (soils, asphalt/seals, concrete/aggregate) with bench calculations; for the senior role, competence in all divisions
• Physically able to move and pick up samples as required
• Advantageous: sampling and preparation experience, administration experience
