Takealot Group, a cornerstone of the African e-commerce landscape, is hiring a Legal Counsel I for its Cape Town headquarters. The role suits someone who thrives in a fast-paced, hyper-growth environment and can handle a wide range of corporate and commercial legal issues. Beyond drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, the candidate helps modernise the legal department, including integrating software and AI-driven solutions to make legal service delivery more efficient and scalable.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements for the group's retail and delivery operations
• Update and refine standard contract templates
• Advise on dispute resolution, litigation and employment matters
• Oversee the intellectual property portfolio and manage IP disputes
• Research the law and draft formal opinions on regulatory developments
• Train internal stakeholders and promote a culture of legal awareness
• Identify and implement legal tech solutions to streamline workflows

Required profile

• Admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa with 3 to 5 years of post-admission experience
• Background at a reputable law firm, the bar, or in-house legal team of a major corporate entity
• Proven expertise in corporate and commercial law and contract drafting
• Able to lead or mentor junior legal professionals
• Strong communication skills and attention to commercial outcomes
