Group General Counsel

About the role

The Group General Counsel will serve as a pragmatic advisor to senior leadership, providing strategic legal counsel and ensuring compliance across Takealot’s operations. This senior role is based in Cape Town and is critical to guiding the company’s legal and regulatory framework during rapid expansion.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure comprehensive adherence to all applicable South African laws across business operations, policies, and procedures.
• Provide trusted strategic legal advice to senior management to manage risks and protect the Group’s assets and reputation.
• Offer informed perspectives on the evolving South African regulatory environment, especially for the digital economy.
• Lead and mentor the legal team, fostering an agile and collaborative working environment.
• Oversee the creation and implementation of internal compliance programmes to support dynamic growth.

Required profile

• LLB degree from a recognised South African university and admission as an attorney or advocate.
• Minimum 10 years post‑admission legal experience, with at least 3 years in a senior legal leadership role, preferably in eCommerce or technology.
• Deep understanding of South African laws relevant to eCommerce, strong contract negotiation, litigation management and dispute resolution expertise.
• Proven leadership abilities, excellent communication skills, and the capacity to thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
