Lecturer – Geospatial Analysis & Remote Sensing

About the role

We are seeking a Lecturer to join the Department of Geography at the University of the Free State. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules focused on geospatial analysis and remote sensing, and will contribute to the department’s research agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses in geospatial analysis, remote sensing and related environmental systems.
• Maintain an active research programme leading to publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Recruit, supervise and mentor postgraduate Geography students.
• Participate in departmental, school and university committees.
• Secure external research funding from industry and other sources.
• Carry out general administrative duties at the university level.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean and Head of Department.

Required profile

• Relevant PhD (NQF Level 10) in Geography, Earth Sciences, GIS/Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science or a closely related field (or a Master’s degree with a five‑year pathway to a PhD for contract appointments).
• Demonstrated experience in geospatial modelling, GIS and remote sensing analysis.
• Record of presenting research at conferences and producing manuscripts suitable for journal submission.
• Ability to teach and supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Required skills

• Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
• Remote sensing data processing and analysis.
• Geospatial modelling techniques.
