Lead Risk Manager & Portfolio Owner - Android Quick Loans
FairMoney · Cape Town
Job description
About the role
FairMoney, a mobile banking institution focused on credit to emerging markets, is hiring a Lead Risk Manager and Portfolio Owner to run its Android Quick Loans portfolio in Nigeria. This is a mini-CEO role: the delegated day-to-day owner of the portfolio's commercial, economic, risk and people outcomes. The role is remote for candidates in South Africa and other countries, and hybrid for those in Nigeria and India.
Key responsibilities
- Own Android revenue, gross loan book growth, risk-adjusted gross profit, economic profit and credit-risk performance
- Build and own the annual business plan and strategic roadmap, and produce the monthly forecast with clear variances and corrective actions
- Manage ECL, approval and disbursal rates, average loan size, exposure, FPD, roll rates, PAR, NPL, repeat value and CAC payback
- Partner with Finance and Portfolio Economics on loan-level and customer-level NPV, funding efficiency and performance attribution
- Own the end-to-end credit strategy: new-to-bank, returning, top-ups and internal consolidation, high-risk segments and rejected-customer re-entry
- Operationalise affordability and run controlled A/B, multivariate and champion/challenger tests, measuring full unit economics
- Translate strategy into decision-engine rules, parameters and implementation requirements, and drive them to production
- Within agreed appetite, budgets and authority, prioritise the roadmap, approve controlled experiments, scale or roll back strategies, reallocate team capacity and escalate blockers
- Build and lead a senior credit-strategy team, establish portfolio rhythms, develop workstream owners and a portfolio deputy, and reduce key-person dependency
- Work with Decision Science, Product, Engineering, Growth, Finance, Collections, Fraud, Compliance, Legal, Operations and Customer Service
Required profile
- 6+ years in consumer credit risk, credit strategy or lending portfolio management
- Proven ownership of a material lending portfolio or product line, including revenue, gross loan book, risk and profitability
- Experience building annual business plans, monthly forecasts and corrective action plans
- Strong digital unsecured-lending experience; Nigerian or broader African-market experience strongly preferred
- Evidence of building senior teams, developing successors and leading complex cross-functional delivery
Required skills
- Advanced understanding of PD, LGD, EAD, vintages, roll rates, IFRS 9/ECL, pricing, offers, tenure, exposure, affordability and NPV
- Strong SQL capability and comfort with Python or equivalent analytical tooling
- Experience turning credit strategy into decision-engine rules and controlled production changes
What we offer
- 25 days paid vacation and sick and public holidays for B2B contractors
- Remote work (with significant CET timezone overlap) or hybrid in Nigeria and India
- Training and development budget
- Paid company business trips
The recruitment process includes a screening interview with the Talent Acquisition team, a business case study and technical interview with the Global Head of Android Lending, and a final interview with the Chief Credit Officer.
