Landfill Manager

About the role

The Landfill Manager will lead the overall operation of a Class A landfill site in Vlakfontein, ensuring safe, efficient and environmentally compliant waste disposal. This senior position reports to senior management and is responsible for people, budgets, contractors and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Forecast and monitor expenditures and budgets for manpower, materials and equipment.
• Build, lead and develop the operations team, optimizing talent and fostering growth.
• Manage day‑to‑day landfill operations in line with the site’s Waste Management License and all relevant permits.
• Oversee waste reception, classification and disposal to maximise diversion from landfill.
• Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual compliance and performance reports to authorities.
• Implement and maintain Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) management systems on site.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in landfill or waste‑management roles, with at least 3 years in a managerial capacity.
• In‑depth knowledge of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM:WA) and related regulations.
• Valid driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office and Sage accounting software.
• Experience with Integrated Management Systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
• Technical knowledge of double composite liner systems (HDPE + clay) and permeability standards.
• Understanding of leachate collection and leak‑detection systems.
• Familiarity with landfill gas management (GNR 924) and geotechnical investigations for liner design.
• Competence in monitoring, compliance reporting and waste acceptance criteria (GNR 635, GNR 636).
