Laboratory Operator - Sample Preparation and Fire Assay

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is hiring an Operator in Barberton. The role covers routine analytical techniques for the Sample Preparation and Fire Assay procedures, including receiving, preparing and weighing samples and carrying out fire assay operations.

Key responsibilities

• Receive samples with the security guard, verify seal numbers against the waybill and sign the waybill
• Sort and box samples on receipt, collect them from Sample Receiving for weighing, and weigh, dry and crush samples as instructed by the client
• Split, pulverize and box samples, perform screen checks and screening for PSA, discard samples and return them to the client
• Carry out weighing, fluxing, fusion and cupelling in the Fire Assay process
• Report daily production figures to the shift/team leader, explain missed targets and report equipment and consumable status
• Follow the supervisor's instructions, keep work areas clean, comply with the QHSE policy and ISO17025/SANAS quality system, and assist with instrument maintenance
• Work in all departments of sample preparation and Fire Assay (rotation), work overtime when needed, and follow compliance and safety requirements

Required profile

• Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science, or equivalent laboratory knowledge and experience recognised through Recognition of Prior Learning
• At least 3 years of experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory
• Willingness to work overtime and rotate between departments

Required skills

• Basic understanding of SLIMS
• Knowledge of measurement, sample preparation, fluxing and fusing is an advantage
