Laboratory Manager

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is hiring a Laboratory Manager in Brits. The role carries overall responsibility for the operation and all functions of the laboratory, including its effectiveness, efficiency and quality, and for keeping the laboratory compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 while meeting customer and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Promote and monitor health and safety in the workplace and environmental policies
• Ensure the quality management system is followed in daily operations and that all analysis standards are met
• Provide technical support or direction for customer services and external clients
• Assist in budgeting for projects and new service development, and develop operational tools, methodologies and procedures
• Lead and supervise laboratory staff, direct program activities and make independent decisions on the division
• Evaluate and report all analytical results, and initiate formal improvement requests when deviations or nonconformities occur
• Review and edit documents to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements

Required profile

• BSc Chemistry or equivalent
• Extensive laboratory experience in a mining environment
• 5 years of supervision at management level in a geochemical field
• Demonstrated interpersonal and organisational skills
• Previous management experience and ability to foster a team approach

Required skills

• Good working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025
• Instrumentation skills
• Extensive experience with laboratory operations
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
