Junior Associate Attorney – Litigation

About the role

Van Velden-Duffey Attorneys is seeking a motivated Junior Associate Attorney to join its Litigation Department. The successful candidate will manage litigation matters from inception to finalisation, appear in court, consult with clients, draft legal documents, and provide strategic legal support under the guidance of senior attorneys and directors.

Key responsibilities

• Manage litigation matters from inception to finalisation.
• Draft pleadings, notices, applications, opinions, and legal correspondence.
• Attend court appearances, consultations, pre‑trials, and mediations.
• Conduct legal research and provide sound legal advice.
• Liaise with clients, counsel, experts, and third parties.
• Ensure compliance with court rules and procedural requirements.
• Prepare and present progress reports on matters.
• Assist directors and senior attorneys with complex litigation matters.
• Maintain high standards of client service and professional conduct.

Required profile

• LLB degree and admission as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum five years post‑admission litigation experience, including Magistrates' Court and High Court.
• Valid driver’s licence and reliable transport.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, organisational and time‑management abilities.
• Professionalism, integrity and a client‑focused approach.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience with legal practice management systems.
• Familiarity with GhostPractice (advantageous).
• Familiarity with LexisNexis (advantageous).
