Java Engineer - Platform (Pipeline)

About the role

Electrum, a payments software company, is looking for Java engineers to join its Platforms team in Cape Town. The team builds the tooling that every other team uses to build, release and run software: Kubernetes clusters on AWS, Helm charts, GitOps deployments with ArgoCD, CI pipelines in GitHub Actions and internal tooling. No platform experience is required, as you will learn alongside engineers who have gone through the same learning curve.

Key responsibilities

• Upgrade clusters and the networking stack during business hours using blue/green node groups, moving live traffic gradually without dropping a payment.
• Build a control plane that tracks the version of each component in every environment and flags what is falling behind.
• Stop configuration drift so environments behave consistently over time.
• Automate what is possible and build the stack rather than closing tickets.
• Debug and diagnose Java services running on the platform, from the JVM through containers, the network and the node.

Required profile

• 2+ years of software development experience.
• A university degree or an equivalent number of years of relevant experience; the role demands proven analytical skills in complex, high-stakes environments.
• Strong Java skills; you will not write backend services day to day, but deep knowledge of Java is needed to support the platform.
