Insurance Manager

About the role

De Beers Group is seeking an Insurance Manager to act as its central authority on insurance and risk financing. The role manages global insurance programmes across mining operations, diamond recovery and processing, global diamond transportation, inventory and specie exposures, retail businesses, corporate functions and strategic initiatives, with accountability for effective risk transfer, claims recovery, regulatory compliance, loss prevention and optimisation of the Group's total cost of risk. It has global scope and involves travel to corporate and operational locations, including mining sites.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the Group's global insurance strategy and risk financing framework, define risk appetite and recommend deductibles, self-insured retentions, limits, insurer panels and alternative risk financing arrangements.
• Design, procure and maintain insurance programmes covering mining and operational assets, capital projects, M&A, corporate and commercial activities and emerging risks, including property damage, business interruption, construction, liability, marine cargo/specie, cyber, D&O, crime, environmental liability and political violence and terrorism.
• Ensure statutory, contractual and regulatory insurance requirements are met across jurisdictions, lead renewals and placements, and provide insurance due diligence for acquisitions, divestments and restructurings.
• Build insurance governance for non-government joint ventures and partnerships, and establish insurance knowledge and management processes within the Group.
• Review arrangements for cost-effective improvement, benchmark against industry best practice and explore alternative risk transfer mechanisms.
• Oversee administration, policy documentation, budgets, premium forecasts and accruals, and coordinate with Finance, Tax and external audit on accounting, claims receivables and provisions.
• Own insurance exposure, policy and claims data, systems and records, and coordinate annual renewals.
• Lead the Group's response to major losses and complex claims, develop claims processes, track performance metrics and recommend risk mitigation.
• Coordinate a network of insurance coordinators and subject matter experts, advise business units, review insurance provisions in major agreements and act as owner of the broker relationship.
• Investigate the feasibility of a Group captive insurance company and lead implementation if chosen.
• Prepare insurance and claims reports for senior management, monitor total cost of risk and support enterprise risk management.
