ICU Unit Manager

About the role

The ICU Unit Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, cost‑effective, high‑quality nursing care in the intensive care unit. This role ensures compliance with professional, ethical and regulatory standards while driving continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Manage staffing acuities, skill mix and departmental costs to ensure cost‑effective quality care.
• Oversee billing, stock management, purchasing and accurate compilation of financial files.
• Identify quality‑improvement opportunities, develop and measure initiatives, and monitor safety standards in line with legislation.
• Investigate negative incidents, capture data on the incident management system and report accidents.
• Ensure patient care adheres to clinical governance, infection‑prevention protocols and evidence‑based practice.
• Lead people management activities: coaching, mentoring, performance monitoring, attendance control and staff development.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with doctors, suppliers, service providers and public stakeholders.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse qualification (Diploma or BCur) with registration on the South African Nursing Council.
• Post‑basic Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (ICU trained) and willingness to complete a Health Service Management qualification.
• Minimum two years’ experience in a private hospital setting, preferably in clinical leadership.
• Sound financial knowledge and ability to interpret financial data.
