HR Country Manager - Renewable Energy

About the role

The Independent Power Producer seeks a Country HR Manager to lead HR functions across South Africa. Reporting to both the Country Manager and the HR Director for Africa, you will shape the HR strategy, manage a small team and ensure plants are staffed with the right talent. The role is based in Johannesburg with regular travel to the Northern Cape and is open to South African citizens meeting BEE criteria.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the country HR strategy in line with regional objectives.
• Report on HR activities, challenges and solutions to the Country Manager and keep the International HR & Administration Manager informed.
• Set team objectives, manage performance, develop staff and oversee the HR budget.
• Conduct manpower planning, lead recruitment for existing plants and new projects, and work with the Recruitment Supervisor.
• Run performance management, advise on pay adjustments, promotions and performance‑based rewards.
• Oversee payroll, handle grievances, disciplinary matters and maintain accurate employee records.
• Manage work permits, visas, licences and build relationships with government officials.
• Lead industrial relations, negotiate with NUMSA, represent the company at the CCMA and resolve disputes.
• Roll out HR policies, ensure compliance with health, safety, security and environmental standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or equivalent.
• At least ten years of HR management experience.
• Proven experience working under a dual reporting line in a multicultural, international organisation.
• Strong industrial‑relations knowledge and solid understanding of South African labour law (preferred).
• Background in energy, mining or large‑infrastructure projects with significant union interaction (preferred).
• Excellent negotiation, relationship‑building and communication skills.
• Ability to plan, stay organised and present with confidence.
• Understanding of the business value chain and familiarity with people‑management systems.
