Hospital Engineering Manager

About the role

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Hospital Engineering Manager based at Life Mercantile Hospital, reporting to the Hospital Manager. The role provides leadership, technical direction and guidance to the hospital engineering function, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient operation of plant and equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the hospital engineering department, implementing maintenance strategies to maximise plant efficiency and availability.
• Manage infrastructure and construction projects, overseeing budgets, contracts and dispute resolution.
• Supervise the engineering team – performance, recruitment, development and retention.
• Perform administrative duties such as performance reporting, document management, data analysis and expenditure validation.
• Track and report KPIs, identify improvement opportunities and drive strategic initiatives for utilities cost optimisation.
• Ensure compliance with OHS Act, construction regulations, SANS and other relevant legislation.
• Investigate new technologies, conduct business case appraisals and secure funding for upgrades.

Required profile

• National S‑Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical (Heavy Current) Engineering with at least 5 years of operations or maintenance experience.
• Practical experience in a hospital or similar environment.
• Proven leadership and people‑management capabilities.
• Knowledge of contract negotiation, OHS regulations, facilities management, financial and project management practices.
