Head of Haematological Pathology – Professor/Associate Professor

About the role
Stellenbosch University, in partnership with the National Health Laboratory Service, is seeking a senior academic leader to head the Division of Haematological Pathology. The role combines strategic leadership, teaching, research and service delivery within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Key responsibilities
- Provide overall strategic direction for the Division, promoting excellence in healthcare, training, research and innovation in haematological pathology.
- Foster an inclusive, collegial environment that supports high performance, communication and teamwork.
- Manage operational, human‑resource and financial aspects, including cost‑centre, facilities and information management.
- Represent the Division internally and externally, including within the NHLS.
- Oversee service delivery for haematological pathology services and ensure quality of teaching, training and research.
- Supervise and assess postgraduate registrars, contribute to CMSA assessment processes, and mentor research projects.
- Develop and lead independent research aligned with national and global priorities.
- Expand collaborations with health services, communities and other stakeholders.
Required profile
- A relevant postgraduate qualification in haematological pathology.
- Current specialist registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
- Proven experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision (at least Master’s level) and service delivery in haematological pathology.
- Demonstrated academic or related leadership and management experience.
- Independent research track record with publications.
- Understanding of the South African higher‑education environment.
