Head Gardener

About the role

A client of ARVO is looking for a visionary, passionate and dynamic Head Gardener to lead a world-class gardening team and drive the continued development of one of South Africa's most exceptional gardens. The ideal candidate combines strong horticultural or agricultural knowledge with excellent leadership, strategic thinking and a passion for delivering exceptional guest experiences. The role involves leading a diverse team, maintaining and developing the gardens, and managing new landscaping and garden projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, develop and inspire a diverse gardening team of about 70 people, and support their growth, development and performance.
• Ensure the optimal maintenance of gardening and farm equipment.
• Develop and manage fertilisation and integrated pest management programmes.
• Plan, implement and monitor irrigation systems for optimal growth.
• Lead the development and implementation of new landscaping and garden projects.
• Manage budgets responsibly and efficiently.
• Maintain consistently high standards and drive continuous improvement across the garden operation.
• Share horticultural knowledge through workshops and presentations for visitors and teams.

Required profile

• Relevant academic qualification.
• At least 10 years' experience in horticulture or agriculture.
• Proven experience managing a successful garden or agricultural operation at senior level.
• Proven ability to lead a large, diverse team with enthusiasm and respect.
• Understanding of the tourism industry and logistical planning.
• Proven project and contract management experience.

Required skills

• Sound knowledge of fruit and vegetable production.
• Knowledge of irrigation systems and drainage.
• Strong leadership, motivational and team-building skills.
• Excellent organisational and planning abilities and good computer skills.
