Group Legal Advisor

About the role

The Group Legal Advisor will proactively support the business by identifying legal risks, interpreting relevant legislation, and providing sound legal advice across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Identify applicable legislation, perform impact analysis and advise business units.
• Draft and review legal contracts, policy documents and standard business communications.
• Provide formal legal opinions on complex matters.
• Support all business areas and participate in cross‑functional projects.
• Manage litigation matters and oversee the intellectual property portfolio.
• Handle complaints, including those from Ombudsman schemes.
• Liaise with regulators such as the FSCA, PA, ASISA and other bodies as required.

Required profile

• LLB degree and admission as an attorney or advocate of the High Court.
• Completion of practical legal training at an accredited law school; postgraduate diploma or degree with commercial focus is preferred.
• Minimum five years post‑articles experience in financial services, preferably within a large corporation, bank or legal practice dealing with insurance/financial services.
• At least two years specialised experience in long‑term insurance.
• Extensive knowledge of financial services legislation (e.g., Insurance Act, LTIA, STIA, FAIS, FICA, CISCA).

Required skills

• Ability to independently solve complex legal problems in a systematic manner.
• Strong verbal and written communication, including report writing.
• Experience drafting formal legal opinions, contracts and policy documents.
• Proficiency in legal research and preparation of committee reports.
• Facilitation and conflict handling capabilities.
