Geosciences Internship – 18‑Month Contract (3 positions)

About the role

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) offers an 18‑month geosciences internship within its Mandela Mining Precinct in Johannesburg. The role provides recent graduates the chance to gain hands‑on experience in research, development and underground trials under the guidance of senior engineers and scientists.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct literature reviews of local and international geosciences research relevant to the programme.
• Assist and support underground trials at various mine sites.
• Engage with researchers, stakeholders and project teams throughout the programme.
• Perform assigned research tasks related to emerging technologies.
• Prepare and present reports on processes, results and findings.
• Attend meetings and present results when required.
• Carry out general administrative duties as directed by project leaders.

Required profile

• Minimum BSc Honours degree in Geology, Geophysics, or Physics & Mathematics.
• Mineral Resource Management qualification is an advantage.
• Experience in a mining environment is a plus.
• Clear criminal record and a valid South African driver’s licence.
• International qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA.
• Successful candidates will undergo a prescribed medical assessment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
