Furnace Bricklayer / Mason

About the role

The Furnace Bricklayer / Mason will report to the Chargehand of Furnace Maintenance and act as the custodian of the glass furnace at Ardagh’s Bellville plant. The role involves preserving furnace conditions through regular maintenance, hot repairs and refractory work to ensure optimal production standards.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain, inspect and keep glass furnaces in good working order.
• Plan, coordinate and execute daily maintenance tasks, including hot repairs and housekeeping.
• Liaise with melting management on all furnace maintenance activities and requirements.
• Complete and manage administrative duties, record weekly, bi‑weekly and monthly check sheets in SAP PM.
• Assist the HQ Furnace Maintenance Engineer during rebuilds and shutdowns.
• Perform additional duties such as supporting batch plant, cullet operations and compressors as directed by the Engineering Manager.
• Control, monitor and reconcile refractory stock levels.
• Uphold and promote safety standards at all times.

Required profile

• Grade 12 / Matric.
• Bricklaying Trade Certificate – Mason/Bricklayer.
• Computer literacy.
• Proven experience in hot furnace repairs and bricklaying.
• Hard‑working, problem‑solving, able to work under pressure with attention to detail.
• Good verbal and written communication; proactive and able to work both independently and in a team.
