Fitters Assistant

About the role

The SA Steelworks Fitters Department is seeking a motivated Fitters Assistant to support daily maintenance and workshop activities. This entry‑level position offers hands‑on experience in a steel production environment, working under supervision to ensure plant equipment runs smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Change water and hydraulic piping as required.
• Strip, clean, and re‑assemble machine parts.
• Perform routine inspections and greasing of plant equipment and vehicles.
• Maintain workshop cleanliness and housekeeping.
• Measure equipment using a tape measure and assist with larger maintenance tasks.
• Operate grinders and drilling machines safely, including changing drill bits and grinder disks.
• Fit bearings, apply grease before assembly, and identify tools and spanners.
• Support the manager/supervisor with ad‑hoc duties and report any safety risks.

Required profile

• Grade 12 certificate and a Certificate in Fitting and Turning.
• Previous experience in a similar industrial environment.
• General knowledge of hand and electrical tools.
• Willingness to work overtime as operational needs dictate.
• Ability to work in a team and independently under physical and climatic challenges.
