Financial Manager / Senior Bookkeeper

About the role

Our client, a well‑established grocery clearance retailer, is seeking a Financial Manager / Senior Bookkeeper to lead its finance function. Based in Midrand, Gauteng, you will ensure accurate financial reporting, strong controls, and compliance with South African labour and tax legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts and provide financial analysis, commentary and interpretation.
• Maintain accuracy of financial accounts, review trial balances and balance‑sheet accounts each month.
• Perform reconciliations of stock, bank accounts and creditors.
• Prepare supporting documentation for auditors and manage audit processes.
• Manage sales and cost‑of‑sales journals, as well as related reconciliations.
• Monitor sales and margin reporting, comparing budget versus actual performance.
• Oversee creditor processes, supplier accounts and payment controls, ensuring invoices and credit notes are captured accurately.
• Administer payroll and HR processes, including onboarding, off‑boarding, leave management and payroll preparation.
• Monitor business expenses, identify cost‑saving opportunities and complete PAYE (EMP201) and VAT (VAT201) submissions.
• Manage inventory adjustments, write‑offs, reporting and maintain the fixed‑asset register.
• Ensure compliance with the Employment Equity Act, Workmen’s Compensation Fund, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Labour Relations Act.
• Supervise and support employees involved in financial processes.
