Environmental Officer – Richards Bay, Bloemfontein and Mpumalanga

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Officer to oversee environmental compliance on construction projects across Richards Bay, Bloemfontein and Mpumalanga. The role ensures that all works adhere to site‑specific Environmental Management Programmes and relevant authorisations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct daily and weekly inspections to verify compliance with Environmental Authorisations, water licences and forest permits.
• Monitor construction footprints, protect flora and fauna, and manage erosion and sediment control.
• Oversee waste management, including safe storage, segregation and disposal of general and hazardous waste.
• Identify, record and report environmental incidents, issue Non‑Conformance Reports and coordinate spill containment actions.
• Deliver toolbox talks, method‑statement inductions and green training for contractors and field crews.
• Prepare monthly compliance reports and validation packs for audit review by Eskom project managers and auditors.
• Act as primary liaison with external conservation stakeholders, inspectors and community representatives.

Required profile

• National Diploma or higher in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management or a related natural‑science discipline.
• Practical on‑site experience in environmental monitoring and compliance within utility‑scale construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of Eskom environmental procedures, the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and integration of Environmental Management Programme requirements.
