Engineering Technician (Production) – Constructive Design

About the role

The South African Navy’s Naval Engineering Services at Fleet Command HQ is seeking a permanent Engineering Technician (Production) Grade A to specialise as a Constructive Design Technician. The role focuses on the design, analysis and project management of ship‑board engineering systems.

Key responsibilities

• Develop detailed constructive and mechanical designs for naval ship systems using CAD tools.
• Analyse defects, provide technical advice and support acceptance trials.
• Manage design projects, including planning, scheduling and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
• Prepare and present technical reports and specifications in English.
• Ensure designs comply with Class, IMO regulations and relevant legal standards.

Required profile

• National Diploma in Engineering or a related qualification.
• Minimum three years post‑qualification technical experience in a constructive/mechanical engineering environment.
• Current registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineering Technician.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Strong problem‑solving, planning and decision‑making abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software (including CAD/Caddie).
• Advanced use of the MS Office suite.
• Ability to read, interpret and draft engineering drawings.
• Technical report writing and specification development.
• Project management and research & development experience.
