DR Grader – Retinal Image Screening

About the role

The DR Grader will join the SA Program Office to accurately assess retinal images using AI‑assisted screening tools. Working within Cape Town City Health facilities in the Khayelitsha‑Eastern sub‑structure, the grader supports early detection of diabetic retinopathy and other ocular conditions, helping to prevent vision loss among patients with diabetes.

Key responsibilities

• Capture retinal images of patients using appropriate imaging equipment.
• Grade retinal images with AI tools to identify the presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy.
• Liaise with nurses and ophthalmologists for confirmation of screening and grading findings.
• Communicate screening results to patients and facilitate timely referrals to ophthalmologists.
• Provide patient education on diabetic retinopathy and its management.
• Record screening data and contribute to monthly reporting for the KESS sub‑structure and Orbis International.

Required profile

• Experience in clinical or community health settings, preferably eye care.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality data capture.

Required skills

• Proficiency with AI‑assisted screening tools for retinal image analysis.
• Competence in retinal imaging techniques.
