Data Scientist

About the role

Capitec, one of South Africa's largest banks, is looking for an energetic Data Scientist to help shape its AI strategy. You will design, build and deploy predictive models that directly influence banking decisions for millions of clients.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build predictive models that drive business performance.
• Take models from concept to production, collaborating with engineers and business teams.
• Gather business requirements and translate them into clean, reproducible, deployable code.
• Work across relational and non‑relational databases in cloud environments.
• Set and uphold best‑practice standards for reusability, reproducibility and continuous monitoring.
• Share expertise with the team and help others grow their technical knowledge.

Required profile

• Master's degree in a quantitative or STEM field with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or Honours degree with 5 years.
• Hands‑on experience in data science, machine learning and deploying models into production.
• Clean, reproducible coding practice.
• Confidence working with relational and non‑relational databases.
• Experience with at least one machine‑learning programming language.
• Experience working in cloud environments.
• Deep understanding of at least one data‑science discipline (e.g., NLP, deep learning) and ability to explain it clearly.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills.
