Data Engineer (Azure & AI) – August Start

About the role

Embelo is expanding its AI and Data capability in Cape Town and seeks a hands‑on Data Engineer to design, build and optimise data pipelines across modern Azure and Databricks environments. The role combines technical delivery with client‑facing consulting, helping translate business problems into robust data solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain scalable data pipelines and orchestration frameworks.
• Develop ETL/ELT processes using Python, SQL, Azure Data Factory, Databricks and dbt.
• Construct and optimise lakehouse solutions with Databricks, Spark and Delta Lake.
• Design ingestion and transformation workflows across multiple data sources.
• Troubleshoot and improve pipeline performance, reliability and scalability.
• Create reusable engineering patterns and raise technical standards.
• Translate business requirements into practical technical designs.
• Collaborate directly with clients and internal teams to shape solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and review technical implementations.
• Partner with AI and analytics teams to ensure data quality, testing, monitoring and CI/CD.

Required profile

• 4–7 years of hands‑on Data Engineering or Data Platform Engineering experience.
• Proven experience building cloud‑based data solutions on Microsoft Azure.
• Strong ability to own solutions from design through delivery.
• Comfortable working in a consulting environment and communicating technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
