Data Centre Shift Technician

About the role

The Data Centre Shift Technician will join Communicate Engineering's operations team to monitor, maintain and optimise mission‑critical infrastructure. Working on a 24/7 shift pattern, the role ensures maximum uptime for electrical, HVAC, UPS, generator and fire protection systems within a high‑availability environment.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain and repair critical infrastructure including electrical distribution, UPS, generator, HVAC and fire protection systems.
• Perform planned, preventative and corrective maintenance to meet reliability and compliance standards.
• Conduct fault‑finding and troubleshooting on critical systems, coordinating repairs with specialist contractors as needed.
• Carry out equipment inspections, switching and isolation procedures, and daily walk‑abouts to identify and mitigate risks.
• Support infrastructure projects, commissioning activities, system upgrades and continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Trade Tested Red Seal Electrician qualification.
• Minimum two years post‑qualification experience in electrical maintenance and fault‑finding.
• Experience working in industrial, manufacturing, critical‑infrastructure or high‑availability environments.
• South African residency or a valid South African work permit.
• Relevant engineering qualification (BEng, BSc, BTech or National Diploma) is advantageous.

Required skills

• Electrical fault‑finding, maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Ability to read and interpret single‑line diagrams, electrical drawings and schematics.
• Hands‑on experience with UPS, generator and HVAC systems.
• Knowledge of fire protection system operation.
• Wireman's licence (advantageous).
