Cyclotron Operations Manager

About the role

The National Research Foundation’s iThemba LABS seeks a senior professional to lead daily cyclotron operations. The role ensures continuous high‑quality beam delivery for research, health, and environmental applications.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee design, construction, and modification of accelerator components to enhance beam variety, intensity and quality.
• Coordinate implementation of new equipment and software, providing operational guidance.
• Lead and manage technical and operational staff across SSC, SAIF and MRD units.
• Maintain 24/7 high‑intensity beam performance and minimise downtime.
• Communicate beam parameters, potential delays and timelines with users.
• Negotiate user requirements and agree on delivery schedules.

Required profile

• BSc (Hons) or Postgraduate Diploma in Physics, Electronics or Mechatronics; Masters preferred.
• At least 10 years of experience in accelerator operation, maintenance and development.
• Minimum 3 years of management experience leading technical teams.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of cyclotron design and operation.
• Expertise with beam‑line diagnostics, magnet systems, RF resonators and vacuum technology.
• Strong background in mechanics, electromagnetism and electronic equipment.
• Excellent communication and conflict‑management abilities.
