CSSD Manager – Surgical Instrument Sterilisation Lead

About the role

The Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) at Life St George’s Hospital is seeking a dedicated manager to lead the decontamination, sterilisation, packing and distribution of surgical instruments. Reporting to the Senior Nurse Manager, the role ensures compliance with legislation, infection‑prevention standards and internal quality policies while supporting safe theatre operations.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee correct packing and sterilisation of instrument sets and linen packs for theatres and doctors’ rooms in line with infection‑control standards.
• Manage CSSD operations to meet legislative requirements and Life Healthcare policies.
• Lead and develop CSSD staff, handling performance management, training and conflict resolution.
• Control departmental budget, equipment maintenance and stock levels to ensure cost‑effective service.
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the department, adhering to SHEQ and infection‑control procedures.
• Promote the unit to doctors, fostering strong working relationships and supporting theatre managers in capital‑expenditure planning.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with current SANC registration.
• Experience in operating‑theatre processes such as scrubbing, flooring or anaesthetic induction, or a qualification in decontamination/sterilisation services.
• Previous experience managing a CSSD department is highly advantageous.
• Proven people‑management and conflict‑resolution skills.
• Flexibility to work varied hours and ability to perform under pressure with strong attention to detail.
