Coordinating Nurse

About the role

International SOS is seeking experienced Registered Nurses to join its Johannesburg medical team. The position moves beyond traditional clinical settings, providing high‑quality medical assistance to a global client base in an international, office‑based environment.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver front‑line telephonic triage and provide medical advice to patients, families, employers and stakeholders.
• Interpret medical situations through risk analysis that considers clinical condition and geographical location.
• Monitor and manage cases through to closure, ensuring appropriate clinical outcomes and financial compliance.
• Liaise with international medical professionals for patients hospitalised or treated overseas.
• Provide pre‑travel and evacuation assistance, including coordination of medical evacuation and repatriation services.
• Conduct bedside medical assessments prior to travel and deliver health and travel advice.
• Accompany patients on international commercial flights as a medical escort when required.

Required profile

• Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse.
• Minimum 7 years’ RN experience, including primary healthcare, emergency, trauma or ICU settings.
• Current and valid ACLS, PALS and ITLS certifications.
• Prior experience in medical assistance, travel medicine, aviation, maritime or telephonic medical advice (advantageous).
• Experience as a Unit Manager or equivalent role.
• Valid passport (EU/UK or additional passport advantageous) and ability to work shift‑based schedules.

Required skills

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certification.
• Computer literacy and proficiency with information and communication technology.
