Country Medical Director – South Africa

About the role

GSK is seeking a Country Medical Director to lead medical governance and execution for its Pharma and Vaccines portfolio across South Africa. The role provides strategic medical and scientific leadership, ensuring patient safety and evidence‑based use of GSK products.

Key responsibilities

• Provide visible medical leadership and accountability for governance across Pharma, Vaccines and partner portfolios.
• Lead the Medical Department to deliver high‑quality scientific input to commercial and development activities and ensure timely execution of Medical Plans.
• Ensure healthcare professionals receive accurate, evidence‑based information through medical information, scientific engagement and educational programmes.
• Chair the local Medical Governance Committee and support crisis management and RMCB processes.
• Oversee Medical Information processes, HTA/HEOR submissions, publications and pharmacovigilance activities.
• Partner with the General Manager and cross‑functional leads to align medical oversight with commercial objectives.
• Develop and retain high‑potential medical talent, ensuring succession planning and an inclusive leadership culture.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MBChB/MBBS or equivalent); postgraduate qualification in management or pharmaceutical medicine is highly desirable.
• Minimum 5 years of industry experience in senior medical functions, including medical affairs, clinical operations, pharmacovigilance and team management.
• Strong grounding in clinical, medical and pharmaceutical science and experience with HTA/HEOR inputs and scientific publications.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, proven leadership and people‑management experience.

Required skills

• Digital literacy with MS Office and literature search tools.
• Project management experience or certification.
