Conventional Turner

About the role

Our client, a well‑established precision engineering company in the Strand/Helderberg area, is seeking an experienced Conventional Turner to join their workshop team. You will operate conventional lathes independently, turning engineering drawings into high‑quality components.

Key responsibilities

• Set up and run conventional lathes without supervision.
• Manufacture parts to engineering specifications, including facing, boring, threading, taper turning, drilling, parting and grooving.
• Select appropriate cutting tools, calculate feeds and speeds, and determine suitable machining parameters.
• Measure and inspect workpieces using verniers, micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators and thread gauges.
• Identify and resolve machining problems, perform repairs, modifications and rework as needed.
• Maintain machinery, tooling and a clean, safe work area.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a Conventional/Manual Turner or Machinist.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and work to close tolerances.
• Strong hands‑on skills with conventional lathes and precision measuring equipment.
• Knowledge of tolerances, fits, cutting tools, feeds, speeds and material characteristics.
• Reliability, attention to detail and the capacity to work independently.
