Composite Design Draughtsman

About the role

Our client, a manufacturer based in Johannesburg South, is seeking a Composite Design Draughtsman to create accurate 3D CAD models and 2D drawings of composite components, assemblies and sub‑structures. The role supports engineers, the composite shop and tooling fabricators to ensure parts are lightweight, manufacturable and meet certification standards. You will report to the Engineering Manager and work closely with the production team.

Key responsibilities

• Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for composite parts, assemblies and sub‑structures.
• Develop mould layout drawings, surface models, trim templates and laminate stack‑up details.
• Produce fabrication drawings for masters, plugs, moulds, fixtures and trim jigs, ensuring manufacturability.
• Support the composite shop by refining lay‑up manuals, cure cycles and trimming guides, incorporating shop‑floor feedback.
• Translate engineering requirements into complete documentation packages, including laminate schedules and reinforcement details.
• Maintain revision control and drafting standards in the company’s PDM system.

Required profile

• N4/N5 or higher qualification in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 2–4 years of experience in composite drafting or modelling, preferably in aerospace, marine or automotive sectors.
• Strong understanding of composite materials such as GFRP, CFRP and associated tooling materials.

Required skills

• Proficiency with SolidWorks or a comparable CAD package.
• Competence in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Experience using a Product Data Management (PDM) system for drawing control.
