Commercial Legal Counsel – Manufacturing

About the role

Our client, a leading African manufacturer, is expanding its in‑house legal capability. The Commercial Legal Counsel will join the Company Secretarial and Legal Department in Fourways, providing first‑line defence on commercial matters and working closely with senior leadership across Southern and East Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including MSAs, SLAs and complex supply/distribution contracts.
• Provide pragmatic, business‑oriented legal advice to various business units operating in Southern and East African jurisdictions.
• Identify, assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risks specific to the chemical manufacturing sector.
• Support protection and management of the Group’s intellectual property portfolio.
• Manage external counsel relationships and oversee resolution of litigation or disputes.
• Assist with corporate governance matters, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and best‑practice frameworks.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders in Procurement, Finance and Operations.

Required profile

• LLB or BCom Law degree.
• Admission as an Attorney of the High Court.
• 3–5 years post‑admission experience, preferably in commercial contract drafting and negotiation.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and professionally push back when needed.
• Exposure to multi‑jurisdictional environments, especially African jurisdictions, is a plus.
• Experience in manufacturing, industrial or highly regulated sectors is desirable.
• Working knowledge of corporate governance frameworks (e.g., King IV) and the Companies Act.
