Blood Bank Technologist

About the role

The South African National Blood Service is seeking a Blood Bank Technologist to perform routine testing in its blood banks. The role includes compatibility testing, post‑natal investigations and preliminary transfusion reaction analysis, as well as verifying results generated by other laboratory staff.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out operational and specialist technical functions related to blood testing.
• Maintain quality and risk standards, ensuring accurate results.
• Perform instrument and laboratory maintenance.
• Provide customer‑related support and maintain good relations with clinical teams.
• Work overtime, night shifts and weekends as rostered; occasional local and national travel.

Required profile

• Good general physical health, reasonable endurance and mobility.
• Must not be colour‑blind; requires detailed‑oriented vision and proficient eyesight.
• Analytical thinking, attention to detail, problem‑solving and sound judgement.
• Ethical behaviour, flexibility, adaptability and a strong belief in the service’s mission.
