Back End Developer – Spring Boot & Java

About the role

PathCare is modernising its digital platform for medical diagnostics. We are looking for an experienced Backend Developer to design, build and maintain high‑performance services using Spring Boot and Java. The role will be based in Cape Town and will work closely with frontend, mobile and data teams to deliver end‑to‑end solutions for specimen processing and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test and deploy scalable backend services with Spring Boot.
• Design, optimise and maintain SQL queries, stored procedures and database schemas.
• Build and document RESTful (and where required SOAP) APIs for internal and external integrations.
• Collaborate with frontend and mobile developers to deliver complete product features.
• Write clean, secure, reusable code following PathCare standards and participate in code reviews.
• Provide technical support, estimate effort and ensure timely delivery of features.
• Maintain architecture documentation and contribute to continuous‑integration pipelines.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in Java development (Java 8 or higher).
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT or a related field.
• Strong analytical and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently.
• Proven track record of delivering enterprise‑grade applications in an Agile/Scrum environment.

Required skills

• Java 8+, Spring Boot, RESTful and SOAP services.
• Microservices architecture and Test‑Driven Development.
• SQL and NoSQL databases (including MongoDB).
• Security best practices, Agile/Scrum methodologies.
• Version control (Git), CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Docker, Flyway), issue tracking (Jira).
• Keycloak integration, and familiarity with health standards such as HL7, DICOM, FHIR, XML.
• Optional: Angular, InterSystems IRIS/Cache ObjectScript.
