Associate Professor – Computer Science & Software Engineering

About the role

The University of Johannesburg seeks an Associate Professor for its Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering. The role combines teaching, research and administrative duties to support the Faculty of Science in achieving its strategic goals.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and honours level courses in Computer Science and Informatics, including preparation and assessment.
• Conduct high‑quality research with an emphasis on peer‑reviewed publications and secure research funding.
• Manage academic administration related to teaching, research and student projects.
• Engage with the university and broader community through project days, mentorship and outreach activities.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree (NQF 10) in Computer Science or Information Technology, preferably in Cyber Security or Artificial Intelligence.
• Proven record of international, peer‑reviewed publications (minimum 1.5 DHET units per year over three years).
• Experience supervising Master’s and Doctoral theses to completion.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, including supervision of honours projects and assessment of practical year projects.

Required skills

• Proficiency in programming languages used within the Academy (assessment‑based).
• Familiarity with the BCS accreditation process or equivalent certification frameworks.
• Experience using Turnitin for plagiarism detection and managing examination scripts.
