Assistant Resident Engineer – Construction & Pavements

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer to support the delivery of road and pavement projects for a SANRAL Community Development contract. Reporting to the Section Manager and Contract Engineer, you will work on‑site in Kimberley, ensuring construction activities meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.

Key responsibilities

• Act as Resident Engineer for contract administration and liaison with clients, contractors, and designers.
• Review construction drawings and manage contractor queries through proper communication channels.
• Inspect works and test results to enforce quality control standards.
• Prepare and update cost estimates to completion.
• Maintain site administration records in line with SMEC’s quality management system and Construction Manual.
• Take minutes and contribute at technical and site meetings.
• Produce monthly progress reports and monitor programme and budget performance.
• Manage site supervision resources and handle claims.

Required profile

• BSc/B.Ing/BTech (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering.
• Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• Minimum 10 years of experience in road and construction projects, including at least 5 years as a Resident Engineer.
• Strong knowledge of major contract conditions and contractual issue management; SANRAL experience is a plus.
• Fluent spoken and written English.
• Based in Griekwastad or able to work on‑site in Kimberley.
