Assistant Payroll Manager (Payspace)

About the role

Our client in Sandton is seeking an Assistant Payroll Manager to support the Remuneration Manager. You will help oversee the payroll department, ensuring accurate processing, compliance, and efficient workflow.

Key responsibilities

• Process new engagements, staff movements and all payroll‑related inputs.
• Handle statistical, legislative and financial data such as bonuses, leave, retrenchment and employment‑equity reporting.
• Assist in budgeting, monitoring departmental spend against actuals.
• Provide guidance to direct reports and manage staffing utilisation to meet deadlines.
• Develop, maintain and train staff on internal payroll workflows and processes.
• Implement and control payroll and Time & Attendance interfaces with systems.
• Ensure accurate record‑keeping, data processing, reconciliations and regulatory compliance.
• Participate in strategy setting and specific payroll projects.

Required profile

• Matric and a relevant tertiary qualification.
• More than 8 years of payroll experience, including at least 2 years in a managerial role.
• Strong numerical ability and basic bookkeeping knowledge.
• In‑depth understanding of South African labour laws (LRA, BCEA, COIDA, OSHA, POPI, Income Tax Act, Wage Determination Act) and bargaining council agreements.
• Valid driver’s licence.
