Accountant - Maitland

About the role

An international engineering and mining company is looking for an experienced Accountant to join its team in Maitland, Cape Town. This full-time, on-site role covers day-to-day accounting, payroll and statutory reporting within a professional services environment, with a focus on accurate transactions, strong financial controls and reliable management reporting. The post reports to the Group Financial Controller.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out timely and accurate month-end and year-end close-out, including monthly adjustments, journals, balance sheet reconciliations and financial reporting.
• Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation and adjustment journals to keep audit readiness continuous.
• Manage monthly payroll, statutory deductions, expense claims, EMP501 reconciliations, IRP5 generation and SARS submissions (VAT, levies and statutory returns).
• Monitor cash flow, run bank transfers, process approved payments and follow up debtors and reconcile supplier statements.
• Review transactions for completeness and accuracy, approving and overseeing purchase orders and staff credit spending.
• Line manage the accounting administrator, giving direction and prioritising tasks so quality and reporting deadlines are met.

Required profile

• BCom Accounting or BCom Finance degree.
• 8 to 10 years of experience in a similar accounting role.
• Proven experience in a professional services or project-based environment.
• Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, bookkeeping and South African tax legislation.
• Desirable: experience in a global company using multi-currency accounting; proactive, investigative and solution-oriented approach; high integrity and discretion.

Required skills

• Advanced MS Office, especially complex Excel spreadsheets.
• ERP accounting systems such as Deltek Vantagepoint or similar.
• Sage payroll software.
• Cloud collaboration tools such as SharePoint.
