Academic Lecturer Positions in Statistics & Actuarial Science

About the role

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Stellenbosch University is recruiting for multiple academic positions – Junior Lecturer, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer – on its Stellenbosch campus. The appointments focus on teaching and research in mathematical statistics and data science, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules in mathematical statistics and/or data science.
• Provide academic support, including tutorial sessions and administrative duties related to teaching.
• Supervise honours projects; for Lecturers and Senior Lecturers, also supervise master's theses, and for Senior Lecturers, supervise PhD research.
• Engage in departmental research activities and contribute to the scholarly profile of the unit.

Required profile

• A completed bachelor’s degree with a specialisation in mathematical statistics and/or data science.
• An NQF Level 8 qualification (honours equivalent) in mathematical statistics and/or data science.
• Demonstrated ability to teach at university level and to supervise research projects.

Required skills

• Strong foundation in probability theory, statistical inference, and asymptotic theory.
• Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of statistical and machine learning methods.
• Ability to develop mathematically rigorous teaching material for statistics and data‑science courses.
