Abattoir Operations Manager

About the role

A meat processing producer of beef, pork and chicken, operating for over 30 years, is looking for an Abattoir Operations Manager based in Harrismith. The role covers all aspects of slaughterhouse operations, from scheduling and staff supervision to quality, safety and production efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and oversee all aspects of slaughterhouse operations to ensure a continuous supply of safe, high-quality meat
• Schedule and supervise slaughter activities and staff in the department
• Ensure compliance with HACCP, hygiene and other QA certifications
• Conduct daily cleaning and maintenance inspections of slaughter tools, equipment and machinery
• Maintain accurate stock records for received and dispensed goods
• Prepare and deliver training programmes and materials for support staff
• Lead, motivate and manage staff, including overseeing recruitment and development
• Manage further processing, packaging and waste management
• Ensure efficient production processes, quality control and cost management
• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot machinery and tools used in slaughtering
• Promote a culture of safety, quality and continuous improvement, and uphold animal welfare standards

Required profile

• National Diploma in Food Science, Food Technology, Animal Science, Biology, Microbiology, Meat Science or a related discipline
• 3 years' experience in meat processing (beef or pork) or food processing, and 2 years supervising a team in a food processing environment
• Essential: experience in fresh/frozen meat production
• Advantageous: 5 years' experience in a meat-related field with strong knowledge of pork facility operations, and experience in further processing, pork and offal packing

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Abaserve
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English
• Leadership, organisational and reporting skills, ability to work under pressure and maintain hygiene and food safety standards
