Yard Planner - AGL Terminals

About the role

AGL South Africa, part of Africa Global Logistics, is looking for a Yard Planner for its AGL Terminals in Cape Town. The Yard Planner controls and plans the complete yard process to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency, taking into account vessel and inter-modal operations, and maintains yard integrity through ongoing space-utilisation analysis. The position is full time and permanent.

Key responsibilities

• Create and maintain a yard layout that supports a 37 GMPH quay-crane operation and an average 30-minute truck turn time.
• Ensure equipment location information has 100% integrity and reduce redundant yard moves to less than 5% of total movements.
• Work with the Planning Manager to set the overall yard strategy and allocate yard space by service, vessel, pod, equipment type and special handling needs (hazardous, out-of-gauge, temperature-controlled).
• Monitor and fine-tune the terminal operating system so yard planning meets strategy requirements.
• Prepare the daily yard work plan and communicate equipment locations, and prepare workflows for housekeeping, empty movements and corrections.
• Report weekly to the Planning Manager on production, yard density, equipment utilisation and allocation changes.
• Nominate empty equipment for shipment as directed by the shipping line.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; a degree or higher in logistics, supply chain management, business administration or a related field is an advantage.
• At least 1-2 years of experience in logistics, warehouse management or yard operations.
• Experience planning, coordinating or organising yard activities is preferred.
• Previous use of Yard Management Systems (YMS) or Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) may be required.
• Yard Management or Logistics certification is an advantage.

Required skills

• In-depth knowledge of yard planning and container terminal operations.
• Knowledge of computer-aided yard planning systems.
• Good oral and written English, problem solving, independence and ability to work under pressure.
